Empires:  A Comparative Perspective

This course is a comparative examination of the ideas and practices of empire throughout history and across many cultures and civilizations, beginning with the very first global empire, the Persian Empire.  The course relies heavily on primarily historical accounts, but also examines the economic basis, political dimensions, and cultural foregrounding of empires.  Every semester, this course will pick and chose two or three empires for closer cross-cultural examinations.
